Available - Serefina English Setter Young Female in Brookside, Pennsylvania

My story
Socialization/training:  Serefina has had no formal training. Serefina has missed most of the critical age for socialization due to being in the shelter during the Covid 19 shutdowns as a puppy. It is recommended that Serefina goes to a behavioralist that specializes in socialization and fear.Good with Children:  Serefina needs a child free home.Good with Dogs: Yes, however, it did take her several weeks to be comfortable with her foster canine siblings. She now plays well with all in our home, including some toy breeds.Good with Cats: NO. She chases and will grab.House trained: She is well scheduled. Stressful situations will mess with her schedule.Crate trained: Yes, very much recommended, the crate is her safe space. Serefina does eat in her crate when the house is quiet.Leash trained: This is a work in progress.Activity Level:  Active.Fence: Fencing is required. Since Serefina has some extreme fear issues, Serefina needs a secure physical fence. Standard chain-link or higher. Serefina is not a candidate for any type of ties outs or open yard. Behavior: Serefina is very shy, and it takes a long time to warm up but once she has warmed up to you, she enjoys the attention and will give kisses in return. It must all be on her terms.  She seems to prefer men over women. She needs a person that will work with her to continue to build her confidence and help her overcome her fears and shyness. She likes hanging out on the couch with her foster family.  Her favorite spots are on back of the couch watching the birds & squirrels out the window or draping herself across your lap. She does have a good sense of prey drive. Serefina is learning to play with toys and enjoying balls & stuffies and has done a good job at entertaining herself. She will pick up and chew small items like a lego or sock.Medical History: Serefina is spayed, microchipped, and UTD on her required vaccinations. The entire litter of pups contracted distemper and parvo while in Greece despite being vaccinated, but she recovered. Serefina is currently on Fluoxetine to take the edge off her fears and anxiety. This will most likely need to be increased when she first gets to her adopters for a period of time. We believe at some point in her life, she will be able to be taken off those. Serefina is on monthly Heartworm and flea preventative. Her next leishmaniasis test is due in December 2021.Serefina originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. She tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250.Foster Comments: Serefina and her littermates were found with their mom on the streets of Greece when Serefina was roughly 6 weeks old. Not long after being found, the world shut down to the Covid-19 pandemic leaving the little family in the shelter with very little human contact. When she was 11 months old, Serefina finally got her passport to head to the states and her long awaited foster home. It has been long road since coming to the States, learning about living in the house and dealing with humans. Progress has been slow at times but when we have a breakthrough, it is a big step forward. It is very clear that Serefina will need a special home that understands and is willing to work with her fear and self-confidence issues, this work will not be rewarded overnight, it will take weeks to months.Serefina needs a home that is quiet without a lot of coming and going. She will need a home where someone is home most of the time and have friendly, playful canines in the home to help show her the ropes and help her feel secure. Serefina still does puppy things plus with her fears, for her safety, she needs a home that is willing to use a crate with her. She likes to cuddle in our bed for short periods, she will lay right on top of you and enjoy her ears or belly being scratched. She may do fine there all night, but we have not tested it. Serefina is afraid of leashes and at this time would not make a good walking/running partner and most likely need to be carried in and out of the house to go potty in the beginning.Potential adopters must have the understanding that they cannot force themselves onto Serefina. She needs to be able to do things on her terms and cannot be rushed or any progress will be lost. The process will take some time, but the reward of her love is worth it. Adopters must also be willing to spend a lot of time at home with her.We believe with continued trust and confidence building, Serefina will blossom into a wonderful family member. Despite her slow beginning in life, this girl is full of Setter smiles and tail wags. Please, only apply if you will welcome Serefina on your furniture, have Setter experience, and willing to work for socialization. Adopters must be able to lift 35 pounds. Serefina will be adopted as a companion pet only, no hunting or free-range running. Due to her fears, we will only consider an adoptive home for her that is within a 500 mile radius of our home.Foster location: Waterloo, IAVolunteer transport can be arranged in the Continental US within a 1,000-mile distance between adopters & foster home. If interstate transport is provided for your adopted dog, there will be an additional charge of $50.00 for the required Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (“Health Certificate”).  Typically, we are able to transport your adopted dog to within 2 hours of your home. *Dogs can be adopted outside the 1000-mile transport distance; however, adopters must be willing to either fly their adopted dog, drive to a location within the 1000-mile transport range, or make independent transport arrangements for their adopted dog. Transports to far Western states, from Eastern states, may have additional restrictions.##920958##
